L.A. Banks (born LaToya Ashante Banks) is an American urban fantasy author. Born in West Baltimore, Maryland, she showed an early passion for writing. However, it was only after earning a degree in psychology and working in corporate America for over a decade that she began writing professionally. Banks is the creator of two successful fantasy series: the "Vampire Huntress Legend" and the "Crimson Moon" series. The "Vampire Huntress Legend" series, which debuted in 2003 with "The Vampire Huntress," features the adventures of Damali Richards, a vampire huntress with a troubled past. The series has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been translated into multiple languages. Banks's work has garnered critical acclaim for its strong female protagonists, fast-paced action, and exploration of social themes. She has received several awards, including the RT Reviewer's Choice Award for Best Urban Fantasy Novel in 2007 and 2008. Her contributions to the genre have also earned her a place in the Black Romantic Times' Hall of Fame.
