Tony Hillerman (1925-2008) was an American author best known for his mystery novels featuring Navajo Tribal Police officers Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn. Born in Oklahoma City, Hillerman served in the US Army during WWII and later worked as a journalist. He began writing fiction in the 1960s, drawing on his experiences living near the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. Hillerman's Navajo mysteries blend mystery, Native American history and culture, and environmental themes. His books have won numerous awards, including the Western Writers of America Spur Award seven times. His critical success stems from his well-developed characters, accurate portrayal of Navajo culture, and exploration of current social issues.
