Born in New York, Pierce began writing fantasy as a teenager and published her first novel at the age of 21. She studied writing at the University of Pennsylvania and worked as a technical writer before becoming a full-time author. Pierce's books have been widely praised for their strong female characters, diverse casts, and immersive worldbuilding. She has won numerous literary awards, including the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy four times.
