Margaret Coel (1932-2013) was an American author, primarily known for her children's literature. Throughout her career, she wrote over 40 books, including picture books, novels, and poetry. Coel's works often explored themes of nature, childhood experiences, and the imagination. Some of her notable picture books include "The Other Side of the Island" (1961) and "The Tree Is a Promise" (1965). Her novels, such as "Tree by Leaf" (1968) and "The House of Dawn" (1975), received critical acclaim for their lyrical language and insightful portrayals of young characters. Coel's contributions to children's literature earned her recognition and awards. She was a recipient of the Newbery Honor Award in 1966 for "The Other Side of the Island" and the Child Study Association of America's Children's Book Award in 1969 for "Tree by Leaf."
