Sara Paretsky is an American mystery writer who introduced the first female private investigator, V.I. Warshawski, to the hard-boiled detective genre. Born in 1947 in Lawrence, Kansas, she grew up in Chicago and graduated from the University of Chicago. Her writing career took off in the 1980s with her Warshawski mysteries. Paretsky's debut novel, "Indemnity Only" (1982), established V.I. Warshawski as a tough, independent, and socially conscious private investigator. The series has since grown to include over 20 books, several of which have won awards such as the Macavity Award, Edgar Award, and Maltese Falcon Award. Paretsky's work has also been praised for its strong female characters and its exploration of social and political issues.
