Timothy Zahn was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1951. He developed a passion for science fiction and began writing stories in high school. Despite struggling with dyslexia, he pursued his passion, earning a degree in physics from the University of Illinois in 1973. Zahn's writing career took off in the 1980s when he published short stories in magazines like Analog Science Fiction and Fact. His breakthrough came in 1984 with the release of "Heir to the Empire," the first novel in the "Thrawn" trilogy set in the Star Wars universe. The trilogy sold millions of copies and established Zahn as a leading Star Wars author. Zahn has written over 60 novels, including the "Cobra" series, "The Quadrail" series, and numerous Star Wars books. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Hugo Award for Best Novella in 1984 for "Cascade Point." Zahn's books have garnered critical acclaim for their engaging plots, well-developed characters, and vivid descriptions of far-off worlds.
