Ann Cleeves, born in 1954, is a renowned British crime fiction writer. Raised in Herefordshire, England, she worked as a probation officer before becoming a full-time author. Cleeves is celebrated for her popular series featuring Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope, set on the rugged Northumberland coast, and her Shetland series, narrated by Detective Jimmy Perez. She has also written standalone novels and the Vera and Shetland series have been adapted into successful television shows. Cleeves's works have garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the CWA Gold Dagger Award in 2006 for "Raven Black," the Crime Writers' Association Diamond Dagger in 2017 for her outstanding contribution to the genre, and the Goldsboro Glass Bell Award in 2022 for "The Rising Tide."
