Charlotte Macleod (1922-2005) was an American author known for her mysteries set in Victorian England. Born in New York City, she developed a fascination with British history and culture at a young age. Macleod began writing in her 40s, publishing her first novel, "Rest You Merry," in 1964. This marked the introduction of her most famous character, Sarah Kelling, a redoubtable art historian and amateur detective. Macleod went on to write over 20 books featuring Kelling, as well as several stand-alone novels. Macleod's work earned critical acclaim for its meticulously researched historical settings, lively characters, and clever plots. She received multiple nominations for the Edgar Award, considered one of the highest honors for mystery writers. Her 1985 novel "The Conjure Wife" won the Agatha Award for Best Novel and was adapted into a successful television miniseries. Macleod's books continue to be enjoyed by readers who appreciate her unique blend of history, mystery, and humor.
