Ngaio Marsh (1895-1982) was a New Zealand detective fiction writer and theatrical director. Born in Christchurch, she developed a passion for theater and drama at a young age. In 1928, she published her first novel, "A Man Lay Dead," introducing the popular detective Roderick Alleyn. Marsh authored over 30 crime novels featuring Alleyn, a charming and intuitive detective. Her mysteries are known for their intricate plots, atmospheric settings, and witty dialogue. Marsh's works have been translated into more than 20 languages. In her later years, Marsh became a successful theatrical director, staging acclaimed productions in New Zealand and London. She received numerous awards for her contributions to literature and theater, including the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1966. Marsh's novels continue to be enjoyed by mystery enthusiasts today, praised for their cleverness, humor, and timeless appeal.
