Chandler's breakthrough came with the novel "The Big Sleep" (1939), featuring his iconic detective Philip Marlowe. He published six more Marlowe novels, including "Farewell, My Lovely" (1940) and "The Long Goodbye" (1953), known for their complex plots, atmospheric settings, and cynical humor.
