**Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970)** Erle Stanley Gardner was an American mystery writer best known for his prolific "Perry Mason" series featuring a cunning defense attorney. Born in Malden, Massachusetts, Gardner was a law student before turning to writing full-time in 1923. His first novel, "The Case of the Velvet Claws," introduced Mason, who went on to appear in over 80 books and more than 50 short stories. Gardner's works are characterized by their fast-paced, suspenseful plots, and astute legal analysis. He received the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award in 1962 and was named a Grand Master of Detectives by the Baker Street Irregulars in 1958. Gardner's books sold millions of copies and were translated into more than 30 languages. The "Perry Mason" novels formed the basis for a long-running television series and several films.
