Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American novelist, short story writer, and journalist. Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Hemingway served as an ambulance driver in World War I before becoming a reporter. He gained fame with his novel "The Sun Also Rises" (1926), which captured the disillusionment of the "Lost Generation." His subsequent works included "A Farewell to Arms" (1929), "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1940), and "The Old Man and the Sea" (1952). Hemingway received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 for his "mastery of the art of narrative." His concise, evocative style and emphasis on action and dialogue influenced generations of writers. Despite his critical acclaim, Hemingway struggled with mental illness and alcoholism. He committed suicide in 1961, leaving behind a controversial legacy as a brilliant but troubled literary figure.
