David McKee (1935-2022) was a renowned British children's author and illustrator. Born in Devon, England, McKee studied illustration at Plymouth College of Art. His career began in advertising, but he soon transitioned to children's books. His first book, "Two Can Toucan," was published in 1964. McKee gained international fame with the popular "Elmer" series, featuring an elephant who celebrates his differences. The character became a symbol of diversity and self-acceptance. Over 28 million copies of Elmer books have been sold worldwide. McKee's other notable works include "Not Now, Bernard" (1980), "The Monster Under the Bed" (1978), and "Eeek! Who's in My Pocket?" (1979). His books have been translated into over 60 languages and have received numerous awards, including the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for "Elmer" in 1990. McKee's ability to blend humor, tenderness, and educational themes made him one of the most beloved children's authors of all time.
