Clive Cussler (1931-2023) was an American author best known for his adventure novels featuring the underwater explorer and treasure hunter Dirk Pitt. Born in Peoria, Illinois, Cussler served in the Air Force before becoming an advertising executive. He began writing novels in his spare time and published his first, "Iceberg," in 1976. The book introduced Dirk Pitt and became a bestseller, launching Cussler's career as a popular novelist. Cussler has written over 80 novels, many of which have been adapted into films and TV series. Notable works include "Raise the Titanic!", "Sahara", and "The NUMA Files" series. He has won numerous awards, including the Horatio Alger Award and the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement. Cussler's books are characterized by their fast-paced action, exotic locations, and historical themes. They have sold millions of copies worldwide and have been translated into over 40 languages.
