Louis Dearborn Lamour (1908-1988) was a prolific American author of Western fiction. Raised in North Dakota, he traveled the country during the Great Depression, inspiring the settings of his novels. His experiences as a fruit picker and gold miner provided vivid details for his authentic Western stories. Lamour published over 100 novels and 25 short story collections, selling over 200 million copies worldwide. Notable works include "Hondo" (1953), "Shalako" (1962), and "The Quick and the Dead" (1973). Lamour received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983 for his contributions to American literature. He was also inducted into the Western Writers of America Hall of Fame in 1965. His books remain highly popular, and many have been adapted into successful films and television shows.
