Anne Inez McCaffrey (1926-2011) was an Irish-American science fiction and fantasy author best known for the Dragonriders of Pern series. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she lived in Ireland from age 12 to 23, where she developed a deep love for horses and the countryside, which would later influence her writing. McCaffrey's writing career began in the 1950s, and in 1968 she published "Dragonflight," the first novel in the Pern series. The series, which follows a group of people who form a bond with telepathic dragons, became a critical and commercial success, selling millions of copies worldwide. McCaffrey received numerous awards throughout her career, including two Hugo Awards and three Nebula Awards. She was also inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2005. Her work has been praised for its strong female characters, compelling world-building, and exploration of themes such as loyalty, courage, and the human connection with animals.
