Mario Acevedo is an American author, screenwriter, and producer of Cuban descent. Born in New York City in 1951, he grew up in the Bronx and attended the High School of Art and Design. After graduation, he studied film at the School of Visual Arts and began his career as a filmmaker. Acevedo's debut novel, "The Serpent's Tail," was published in 1991 and received critical acclaim. It was followed by "In the Shadow of the Law" (1993) and "Tropical Gangsters" (1995). His work often explores themes of race, ethnicity, and identity in the Latino community. Acevedo has also written screenplays for several films, including "Piñero" (2001), "Raising Victor Vargas" (2003), and "Machete" (2010). He has received numerous awards for his writing, including the Humanitas Prize, the Imagen Award, and the Independent Spirit Award.
