Maeve Binchy (1940-2012) was an Irish novelist and short story writer known for her heartwarming and insightful works capturing the lives of ordinary people in small communities. Born in Dublin, Binchy began her career as a journalist before turning to fiction. Her first novel, "Light a Penny Candle" (1982), was a critical and commercial success, establishing her as a master of the contemporary women's novel.
