John Verdon (1942-2018) was an American author known for his gritty and compelling crime fiction novels. After serving in the US Army, he worked as a journalist before turning to writing full-time. Verdon's debut novel, "The Irish Connection," received critical acclaim and launched his series featuring Detective Dave Gurney. The Gurney series, which includes "Think of a Number," "Three Widows," and "Fast Ice," garnered numerous awards, including the Shamus Award for Best Private Eye Novel and the Barry Award for Best Novel. Beyond the Gurney series, Verdon wrote several standalone novels and short stories. His work is praised for its strong characterization, intricate plots, and realistic portrayal of police work and forensic science. Despite his talent, Verdon remained a relatively unknown author until later in his career.
