Andrew Vachss (1942-2021) was an American attorney, criminologist, and author known for his dark and unflinching crime fiction. Born in New York City, he witnessed violence firsthand from a young age, which shaped his perspective on crime and justice. As an attorney, Vachss fought for the rights of the powerless, including abused children and the mentally ill. His experiences on both sides of the criminal justice system informed his writing, which often delved into the depths of violence, trauma, and redemption. Vachss's Burmeister series, featuring private investigator Burke, gained him widespread acclaim. His novels have been praised for their unflinching realism, stark prose, and compassionate portrayal of marginalized characters. He received numerous awards, including the Shamus Award (1991) and the Maltese Falcon Award (1994). Despite the critical success of his books, Vachss remained an outspoken critic of the American justice system, advocating for reform and support for victims of abuse.
